PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Thank you for your interest in JMU’s Noyce Scholarship Program. We are currently seeking applicants who are interested in becoming secondary science or mathematics teachers. Those accepted to participate in the program will be supported through scholarships while working to become science or mathematics teachers in secondary schools.

Please take a moment to read the following eligibility requirements and expectations when applying for this scholarship:

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicants must show an interest in teaching through participation in formal or informal STEM education activities (e.g. tutoring, volunteering in a classroom, participating in outreach activities, working in museum education, serving as a camp counselor, or helping a classmate understand course material).
2. Applicants must be enrolled in and make satisfactory and timely progress through the secondary science or mathematics education program. This includes completing required coursework in mathematics or a science major and teacher education on schedule, completing all required assessments, meeting all stated expectations as part of degree and licensure requirements, and meeting application deadlines.
3. Applicants must have completed, or be currently enrolled in, MSSE 370/371 (or its equivalent) or MSSE 240 at the time of application to the Noyce Scholarship Program.
4. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.7 or better.

Expectations for awarded scholars
1. To be awarded a Noyce scholarship, students must be fully admitted to and remain enrolled in the secondary teacher education program.
2. Noyce Scholars must continue to be enrolled in and make satisfactory and timely progress through the secondary science or mathematics education programs. This includes completing required coursework on schedule, completing all required assessments, and meeting all stated expectations and deadlines as part of degree and licensure requirements.
3. Noyce Scholars must participate in meetings and events that are part of the program. These will include cohort-building activities that contribute to your preparation and development as a science or mathematics teacher.
4. Noyce Scholars will periodically be asked to participate in interviews, write reflections, and fill out surveys as part of the overall program evaluation process.
5. Those who are awarded Noyce Scholarships must teach in a high-needs school district for two years for every year of scholarship funding received, within 8 years of graduation and licensure. For Noyce Scholars who do NOT meet this expectation, the scholarship will revert to a student loan to be repaid.
6. Noyce Scholars are expected to participate in mentoring, induction activities, and other support programming during their first two years of teaching.
